Suspensions are one of the essential features of a motorcycle. American motorcycles had rigid frames—no rear suspension. But as highways improved and speeds rose, rear suspension became necessary to provide chassis stability. Letting just the sprung wheel ride up and down over bumps saved the rider and chassis from their disturbance.

The rear shock provides two basic functions: Supporting the weight of the rear of the bike with a bump-softening spring and controlling any up-and-down oscillations of the suspension by providing damping. Damping is a controlled friction force that drains the energy out of unwanted suspension motions, such as the bouncing that would otherwise continue after every bump.

Yamaha FJR1300

This Yamaha is durable, comfortable, and competent. The electronically adaptable suspension makes short work of any graded surface, and the aerodynamic protection given by the fairing is excellent. The cruise control is efficient and steady, even in mountainous regions. The torquey motor makes the journey easy, and the superb handling requires very little attention, even on tight mountain roads.

BMW R 1250 GS

BMW’s R 1250 GS is one of the most sought-after adventure bikes available in the market. The flagship BMW has two personalities: living room comfort on the highway and Sherpa-like capability on the trails. If you want to sit on a bike comfortably all day, BMW is the best way to do it.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

The stock seat is a dream. The upright riding position is excellent for long travels. It is well balanced and competent, so you never have too much effort riding this bike. There are also materials aimed at convenience and wind protection that make it easy to set up the ‘Strom for lengthy journeys.

Honda NC750X

Pricing for 2020 hasn’t been out in the market, but even if the 2019 price of $8099 gets a bump, the NC750X is a good value. It is ready with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that gives for comfortable one-hand riding. It has spacious ergonomics that are comfortable with long travels. The slim and low seat means nearly anyone can drive it, and the small screen does a good job, directing air onto your shoulders and giving your helmet buffet free.

Kawasaki H2 SX

This rig is more sturdy than its Concours 14 sibling, and lighter too. Both of which made for confidence-inspiring touring. This Kawasaki is an excellent option if you’ve got a long trip to the right roads, they want to indulge those roads once you’re there seriously. If you lean a little bit to the sports side of touring, you will probably enjoy the H2 SX.
